Woman critically injured in possible road rage shooting in Chicago's Brighton park neighborhood

Chicago police said a woman was critically injured in a possible road rage shooting in the city's Brighton Park neighborhood Thursday morning.

CPD said a 32-year-old woman was a passenger inside a car in the 2400 block of W. 47th Street around 9:30 a.m. when a gray sedan pulled up alongside them, and someone inside opened fire.

The woman was struck in the head and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition. No other injuries were reported, police said.

A man in a pink shirt, who 15h Ward Ald. Ray Lopez said is the victim's husband, was visibly overcome with emotion at the scene after the shooting, dropping to his knees in the middle of the street at one point. At least one car seat was visible inside the victim's car, but it was not immediately clear if any children were actually present at the time of the shooting.

The shooter's car drove away southbound on Western, according to police.

Ald. Lopez said road rage may have motivated the shooting, saying the conflict between the two cars may have gone on for several blocks, culminating with the shooting.

"It's a jolt to all of us because nobody expects that kind of violence and, I hate to say it in such terms, but you could understand if gangbangers are shooting at each other. You can't understand why a young woman coming to a red light is going to have to wonder whether or not the person following her is going to shoot her," he said.

Police closed off part of 47th Street for hours investigating. CPD has not given additional details about the motive behind the shooting.

No one is currently in custody. An investigation by Area One detectives is ongoing.
