Being a junior police officer at Jefferson Elementary and Washington Intermediate in the 1950s and ’60s was a wonderful learning experience about working as a team to ensure the safety of our students. Back then we controlled traffic on Kapahulu Avenue and Ala Wai Boulevard by coordinating the lowering of our stop signs to get all the traffic halted so that students could cross safely. The reward? A uniform to proudly wear and a field day with Honolulu Police Department officers.
